We have just returned from a fishing charter with a group of 8 anglers from the Philippines, who flew into Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, just for a chance to go deep sea fishing in the waters of Sabah. They had booked for a 4 day/ 3 night charter, arriving on 1st August 2010, and flew back today.
We went out to sea from Kota Kinabalu city on 2nd August, and traveled north-east towards the waters around Mantanani island. We arrived at our planned location after almost 6 hours. The weather condition for this trip wasn’t ideal, as the sea was quite choppy. You can see the sea condition from this video.
The Weather For This Trip
Still, anglers from any country will enjoy the chance to charter a boat and do some serious fishing here. Even if the weather wasn’t the best for this time of the year. The sea was a little rough, and it was rained. Normally, April to July are the ideal time for going out to sea. But weather is hard to predict, and conditions can change.
The Catch For This Trip
For this trip, our anglers from the Philippines managed to land a fair number of fishes, best described as a modest catch. While the rain will bring the fishes up, we were not able to explore more fishing spots due to the choppy waves. We had originally planned to go further out to sea, but in this case, the conditions were not ideal. Still, there were plenty to smile about.
The End Of The Trip
We arrived back to Kota Kinabalu city on 5th August in the afternoon. Our anglers returned to their hotel to get some rest and perhaps explore the city. We met up in the evening to take them to dinner, feasting on the fishes they caught. They will be flying back to the Philippines tomorrow.
The Hotel They Stayed In
They stayed in 1 City Hotel, located in Kota Kinabalu city, in Segama Complex. 1 City Hotel is a relatively new boutique hotel, tastefully furnished, in the middle of the city. Standard rooms start from RM 108.00, off-peak rates.

What is it like to go deep sea fishing in Sabah waters? For one, you are almost always assured of a good catch, come rain or shine. Because Sabah is located at the ideal spot, with shallow waters around the coast of Sabah, and the deep sea further out.
Where you go fishing depends on the type of catch you are interested in. Some species are found in shallow waters, in and around the various islands of Kota Kinabalu and Sabah. While other species of fish can only be found in deeper waters of more than 100m.
For short fishing trips, we might head out to the waters around Mengalum Island, north-west of Kota Kinabalu. It takes about 3 hours to get there with our boat, the 7 Star. The waters here are less than 100m deep, and the type of catches are Grouper, Red Snapper, Barracuda, Travelly, Marlin, Yellow Fin Tuna and Mackeral to name a few.
Heading towards Matanani Island, off the coast of Kota Belud is a trip of 6 hours with the 7 Star. So where we ultimately fish depends on how long you charter our boat for. With adequate time, we might head to the waters near an island, stop for day to do some fishing before we continue out to deeper waters the next day.
In the deep sea, with depths of more than 150m, you can expect to catch Amberjacks, Ruby or Black Groupers. These types of fishes are typically found in deep waters, also these fishes are largely in size and you can expect a good fight. Travel time out to deep waters can take up to 8 or 10 hours.
Fishing in the waters of Layang-Layang island, also known as Swallow Reef, is a 10 hour journey with the 7 Star. This is recommended for long charters, as the fishing here is particular good. The International Game Fishing Tournament Labuan 2010 is held here, as was the case in the previous years.
So, if deep sea fishing is for you, drop us an email and we can give you more details. Let us know your schedule, and we can work out your fishing trip. Alternatively, you can call us, our contact information is found at the bottom of this page.
The Labuan International Game Fishing Tournament, IFGA, began in 1997, jointly organized by the Labuan Tourism Committee and Labuan Angler’s Association. In the first competition, it attracted almost 30 participants. Since then, the number of participants has been steadily increasing and includes anglers from all over the world.
Recognized in 1999 by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA), the tournament follows IGFA rules and regulations. It has since been accepted as an international game fishing event and has also attracted many local anglers. For the fishing experience and the prize money.
The 2010 tournament was held in Layang-Layang, and ot took about 10 hours to get there from Labuan. 7 Star Adventure is a regular participant in this tournament. In 2009, we came in 10th place, with a catch of 77kg, the best of 6 fishes. The judging is based on the total combined weight of 6 species of fish, the type of catch is provided by the organizers.

They say the thrill of fishing is the pursuit of the illusive, and anglers are always talking about the big one. Well, my friends, the big one and the illusive is attainable in the waters around Sabah. You just have to hit it at the right time and the right spot. The deep waters in Sabah offer some world class fishing, whether you are trolling, bottom fishing, jigging or popping.
The best thing about deep sea fishing in Sabah? The company of like minded fishing enthusiasts, and the satisfaction of the catch. These fishes were caught on board the 7 Star Fishing Adventures, a deep sea fishing boat charter operating out of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
